Gas spring vs gas traction spring — the differences

Both types use compressed gas — but act in opposite directions. Here are the key differences at a glance.

Operating principle

The gas spring pushes the piston rod out of the cylinder when unloaded. It is used to open flaps and hold them in the end position.

The gas traction spring pulls the piston rod into the cylinder. It is used to close flaps automatically or to reset mechanisms into a rest position.

Typical fields of use

Gas springs are found everywhere heavy flaps need to open easily and be held safely — bonnets, machine hoods, tailgates, storage flaps.

Gas traction springs are mostly used in special-purpose machine building, safety doors and self-closing mechanisms — wherever a defined end position is reached automatically.

What to consider when choosing

A clear definition of the desired end position and installation direction is important. Confusing the type leads to a non-working mechanism — the spring then moves in the wrong direction.
