Gas springs in mechanical engineering — requirements and solutions

In mechanical engineering, gas springs are often considered safety-relevant components: they hold safety hoods open while operators perform maintenance. The requirements for service life, constant force and operational reliability are correspondingly high.

Safety first

The design must ensure that the hood does not fall back uncontrolled in any position. Typically the spring is dimensioned so the hood reaches the end position automatically from a defined opening angle and is held safely there.

Materials and surfaces

For machines in dry indoor environments, burnished steel is enough. For machines with water, oil or cleaning agent contact we recommend stainless steel 1.4301 or 1.4404 — particularly in food production, pharma and cleanroom.

Sizing and maintenance

Gas springs for mechanical engineering are typically maintenance free. A visual inspection during the annual machine maintenance is sensible — visible damage or worn pivot points should be replaced promptly.
