Choosing the right gas spring — a guide for designers

Which type, which material, which stroke? This guide helps you identify the optimal gas spring for your application.

Type: gas spring, gas traction spring or lockable gas spring?

The choice of type depends on the desired function. Gas springs open and hold flaps. Gas traction springs close and reset components. Lockable gas springs allow locking in any position.

Material choice

Burnished steel is the standard and sufficient for most industrial applications. Where corrosion, food contact, cleanroom or medical technology matter, stainless steel versions in 1.4301 or 1.4404 are used.

Determining stroke and length

The stroke must at least match the difference between extended and retracted spring length. Make sure you have sufficient installation space and avoid the spring reaching the mechanical end stop.

End fittings and connections

Eyes, clevises, angle joints or ball sockets — the choice depends on the pivot point and the possible angular misalignment. Stobo offers the complete range to match the spring.
